After a long hiatus, the website is back by popular demand.
Today, students took lecture notes regarding the five main imperial motives:
Economic
Ideological
Political
Religious
Exploratory
Following the lecture, students broke into groups and began analyzing a series of primary sources for evidence of imperial motives.
Students who were absent are expected to make up this exercise before or after school.

Today, we said goodbye to China and began exploring the West African kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhai. We began with five new vocabulary words:
Vegetation-All plants or plant life of a place as a whole.
Commodity-Any useful natural product.
Hajj-A pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must make at least once in his/her lifetime.
River Basin-The fertile area around a river.
Ethnic Group-A group of people who share the same customs and have a similar language.
Students were also to read the first part of a chapter packet and complete an accompanying worksheet. Further, students needed to underline the passages in the packet where they found their answers.

Today, we completed a graphic organizer depicting the reasons for the fall of the Han Dynasty in class. Students were to complete an assessment whereby they answered questions based upon information contained in the graphic organizer.
MONDAY, 19 SEPTEMBER 2011
Today, students utilized a class set of atlases to find information about the geography of China and how it affected the growth of Chinese civilization. Students who were not present in class today will have to see me in order to complete this activity.
*HOMEWORK: Students needed to read and interpret two poems from ancient China that spoke to the value of family in that society.

Today, we completed filling out our religion flow charts and began watching the first portion of the film 30 Days about a Christian man from West Virginia who is sent to live with a Muslim family in Dearborn, MI. Students will be completing to a film guide on the movie.

Today, we completed our pre-assessment and began learning the first of five new vocabulary words for our unit on World Religions.

POLYTHEISM-A religions with more than one god.
HOLY LAND-Area of the world that includes modern day Israel and parts of Egypt and Jordan that contains holy sites important to Christians, Jews and Muslims.
